One of my favorite shots of Colorado’s state flower.

Welcome to my website! Here I hope to share some of my photos and experiences for you to enjoy. Please bear with me as this site goes through its growing pains.

  1. Hello, I’ve been following your posts on thewildernesshunter.net recently. I love your photos and journal entries – thanks for sharing! Quick question – I am an avid outdoorsman (hunter/fisherman) and spent most of my life trekking around the CO mountains. I am a very avid bow hunter. This year, my hunting partner and I are considering hunting unit 500 in the Boreas Pass area. Researching this unit is how I located your website. It appears as though you’ve hunted this specific area several times. I’m very familiar with units 49 and 50, but have never fully explored 500.

I know this is frowned upon, but I thought I’d reach-out to see if you would share your thoughts on bow hunting in the Boreas Pass area. We are specifically considering the area between Boreas and Hoosier Pass (north side of Mt Silverheels). Any information you can share would be greatly appreciated as we have yet to have an opportunity to scout the area and may not get to prior to submitting this year’s application.

    Thanks so much!

    Sincerely,

  2. Hi Nathan!

Sorry to respond to your comment nearly a month after the application deadline! I have been hunting that exact area for a few years now, though never during archery season, all muzzleloader. However I have had success in the area around Red Mountain near the northern border between units 500 and 37. What I have seen during black power time is that the deer like to hang out up high, but the Elk stick to the timber most of the time, except to come out above timberline in the evening. The rough part of the unit is the relative lack of access; I usually come up FS road 406 from the Selkirk campground. It crosses the Continental divide north of Silverheels and west of Boreas pass. There is another trail on the west side of Silverheels near Alma, though I haven’t yet explored it. I believe it is FS41. Hope this will help, and please feel free to contact me anytime at thewildernesshunter@gmail.com. I would love to hear what you may discover also, I think that if we as hunters share what we find more, it makes us all better hunters!

    Damian
